Introduction in plain English: What is a library?

The library in plain English

Every municipality in Finland has a public library.

Public libraries are meeting places and cultural centres.

Libraries are for everyone: children, young people, women and men.

They are places where you can:

  • borrow books, magazines, music and films
  • use library computers, printers and other electronic devices
  • go to events and join a book circle
  • spend time and meet friends
  • read and study in a study area
  • book a space for a meeting or an exhibition

Almost all library services and events are free of charge.

You need a valid library card to borrow materials from the library.

The library staff answers your questions and helps you use the library.
